You will never see Emeli Sandé the same way again after learning her true story—a journey marked by resilience, identity, and a refusal to be silenced.
Born Adele Emeli Sandé in Sunderland, England, to a Zambian father and Scottish mother, Emeli grew up straddling two worlds. At four, her family moved to rural Scotland, where being a young Black girl in a nearly all-white village meant she stood out whether she wanted to or not.
Her father, a teacher at her school, kept her on a tight leash, and every misstep reached him instantly. But at age seven, Emeli wrote her first song, “Tomorrow Repeats,” a sign of her precocious talent and early determination.

By 11, she was performing at school talent shows, and at 15, she caught the attention of Choice FM in London. Despite early offers from record labels, Emeli chose to pursue medicine, enrolling at the University of Glasgow and specializing in neuroscience.
Yet music remained her true calling. She wrote songs at night, and her sister Lucy filmed her playing piano and singing, which led to winning Trevor Nelson’s BBC urban music competition. This opened doors to London’s music scene and gave her first taste of performing with a live band.
Emeli’s journey wasn’t straightforward. The management company she met through the contest rejected her—most would have quit, but she pressed on. Her parents sent her demo to BBC Radio 1Xtra, and soon DJ Ras Kwame was playing her music.

She began writing for other artists, including Alicia Dixon, Chipmunk, Cheryl Cole, and Susan Boyle, all while still in medical school. Her first top 10 hit came as a co-writer and singer on Chipmunk’s “Diamond Rings,” but she wasn’t allowed in the video, her talent used but her face unseen.
Determined to front her own music, Emeli signed with Virgin and EMI in 2011, switching to her middle name to avoid confusion with another rising star, Adele. Her debut single, “Heaven,” and her chart-topping collaboration “Read All About It” with Professor Green set the stage for her breakthrough.
Her album “Our Version of Events” became the UK’s best-selling album of 2012, even outselling Adele’s “21.” She performed at the London Olympics, won four Brit Awards by age 25, and was invited to the White House by President Obama.
But at the height of her fame, the British press turned on her, labeling her “overexposed” and mocking her every appearance. For Emeli, the criticism was more than professional—it was personal.
She represented little Black girls who needed to see someone like them succeed. Facing backlash, she disappeared, traveling to Zambia to reconnect with her roots and rediscover her identity.
After a brief marriage and divorce, Emeli poured her emotions into her music, releasing “Long Live the Angels” and “Real Life,” and winning more awards. In 2022, she publicly revealed her relationship with classical pianist Yoana Karemova, later announcing their engagement.
By 2026, after their split, she reclaimed her birth name, Adele, and continued building her musical empire as both artist and entrepreneur.
Emeli Sandé’s story is about more than her voice—it’s about the courage to use it. From a child who didn’t fit in to a global star who refuses to disappear, she’s become a symbol of perseverance, authenticity, and the power of self-discovery.
