Pastor Creflo Dollar, once a symbol of prosperity gospel and unwavering confidence, is now facing a deeply emotional reckoning that has left his followers stunned. The man who preached abundance and faith is confronting painful truths that threaten the foundation of everything he built.
Born in College Park, Georgia, in 1962, Dollar’s beginnings were humble. His father was a police officer and his mother worked in a school cafeteria. He dreamed of playing professional football, but an injury ended those hopes, leading him to Bible study during recovery.
A profound spiritual awakening pushed him toward ministry, and in 1986, he founded World Changers Ministries Christian Center in the same cafeteria where his mother once served meals. The congregation started with just eight people, but Dollar’s message quickly resonated, and the church grew into one of America’s largest megachurches.

Dollar’s doctrine evolved into the prosperity gospel, teaching that faith, positive confession, and generous giving would unlock financial blessings. This message attracted thousands, and by the 1990s, Dollar was a global televangelist.
The World Dome, an 8,500-seat sanctuary built in 1995 for nearly $20 million, symbolized his rise. By the mid-2000s, his church boasted over 30,000 members and $70 million in annual revenue.
However, as his influence grew, so did scrutiny. Dollar’s personal wealth—luxury homes, cars, and a New York condo—sparked controversy. While many followers struggled financially, Dollar lived in extravagance, claiming it was evidence of God’s blessing.
Watchdog groups criticized his lack of financial transparency, and the U.S. Senate Finance Committee investigated him and other televangelists for possible misuse of ministry funds. Dollar refused to share financial records, surviving legally but suffering reputational damage.

The most infamous scandal came in 2015, when Dollar launched a campaign to raise $65 million for a Gulfstream G650 private jet, arguing it was necessary for ministry work. The request shocked even loyal followers, and the backlash was swift.
The fundraising page was taken down, but the incident cemented concerns about Dollar’s priorities and the materialism of prosperity gospel.
In 2012, Dollar’s public image suffered further when he was arrested after an altercation with his 15-year-old daughter. Charged with battery and cruelty to children, Dollar denied wrongdoing, claiming he only restrained her after she struck him. He completed anger management, but the incident exposed the human vulnerability beneath his polished facade.
The most shocking confession came in June 2022. Dollar admitted in a sermon that his teachings on tithing were wrong. For decades, he had preached tithing as a divine requirement, but now he said it belonged to Old Testament law, and Christians should not give out of fear or obligation. He urged his congregation to discard all his previous teachings on the subject.

For some, this was an act of honesty; for others, it was a confession that came too late. Dollar offered no refunds or accountability for money collected under teachings he now rejected, and his luxury lifestyle remained unchanged.
Creflo Dollar’s story is now one of faith, ambition, power, and consequence. He is forced to confront the cost of what he taught, raising difficult questions about accountability, leadership, and spiritual responsibility. The man who preached certainty and prosperity must now face a narrative where his own teachings became the source of his downfall.
