Yara Shahidi, known for her breakout role as Zoey Johnson on “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish,” is a star who defies expectations and whose life story reveals layers most fans never see.

Born in 2000 in Minneapolis, her name carries meaning: “Yara” means someone close to your heart, “Sai” means shadow, and “Shahidi” means witness.

Her father, Afshin Shahidi, is a principal photographer for Prince, and her mother, Keri Salter Shahidi, brings African-American and Choctaw heritage. The family moved to California when Yara was four for Afshin’s work, creating a household rooted in artistry, excellence, and unapologetic Blackness.

Yara’s parents fostered curiosity and discipline, insisting acting was something she did—not who she was. Instead of watching TV, Yara and her siblings built forts and listened to audiobooks, stimulating imagination. She began acting at age six, appearing in commercials and HBO’s “Entourage.” While building her career, she trained in Tang Soo Do, earning a black belt and learning discipline and respect.

Her early film work included roles opposite Eddie Murphy in “Imagine That,” Angelina Jolie in “Salt,” and Tyler Perry in “Alex Cross.” She played young Olivia Pope in “Scandal,” where Kerry Washington encouraged her to stay true to herself—a lesson that shaped Yara’s trajectory.

At 14, Yara auditioned for “Black-ish,” landing the role of Zoey Johnson. The show became a cultural phenomenon, tackling topics like police brutality, colorism, and voting while Black. Yara’s portrayal earned her multiple awards, and she became a style icon, signing with Women Management and appearing in British Vogue.

But Yara’s ambitions stretched beyond acting. In 2017, she was admitted to Harvard University, recommended by Michelle Obama. She majored in interdisciplinary sociology and African-American studies, focusing her thesis on Black political thought under neo-colonialism.

While starring in “Grown-ish,” she balanced filming 18 episodes a year with a full Harvard course load, thanks to contracts structured by her mother and manager to prioritize education.

Yara’s activism is as prominent as her acting. She founded 18by18, now We Vote Next, to empower young voters. She partnered with Young Women’s Leadership Network to create Yara’s Club, mentoring girls online. She joined Dior’s Stand with Women campaign and signed open letters for Artists for a Ceasefire. Her activism has faced criticism for being performative, but Yara insists on engaging with communities and difficult conversations.

She maintains privacy, recently revealing a three-year relationship kept out of tabloids. Her journey includes learning to prioritize herself, developing visceral reactions, and exploring attachment styles. In 2023, she played Tinkerbell in “Peter Pan & Wendy,” executive produced “Sitting in Bars with Cake,” and starred in “Extrapolations” on Apple TV+.

Yara launched Seventh Sun Productions with her mother, developing projects centered on joy and inclusive storytelling. She’s a Gucci ambassador, partners with Dior and Adidas, and is single, focusing on self-growth and career.

The family secret? Yara is the first cousin once removed of rapper Nas. Her maternal great-grandparents are Nas’s maternal grandparents. With Prince as a family friend and Nas as kin, Yara grew up surrounded by excellence and artistry.

What sets Yara apart from other Hollywood “nepo babies” is her work ethic. She earned a Harvard degree while starring on TV, built a production company, and uses her platform for meaningful activism. As of 2026, her net worth is around $3 million, earned through acting, production, and fashion partnerships.

Yara Shahidi represents the possibility of being multiple things at once: intellectual, creative, activist, producer, student, and daughter. She honors both her Iranian and Black American heritage, refusing to be simplified. At 25, she’s just getting started, building a world and legacy that defies expectations.
