For more than 1,500 years, something extraordinary lay hidden beneath the soil of Galilee, silent and untouched.
Now, archaeologists have uncovered a remarkable discovery near the Sea of Galilee: an ancient Byzantine church with a beautifully preserved mosaic that offers powerful insight into how early Christians honored Peter, the chief of the apostles, and remembered the words of Jesus.
The Sea of Galilee is not just a place on a map—it is a landscape steeped in memory. Along its shores, fishermen once worked, villages rested, and Jesus called ordinary people into extraordinary purpose.

Among them was Simon, later known as Peter, the bold and emotional disciple who would become a central figure in the Christian faith. For centuries, Christians have wondered about Peter’s true role among the apostles, and this new discovery sheds light on that question.
Near the northern shore, at a site known as El Arj, archaeologists initially found only fragments of pottery and scattered ruins. But as excavations progressed, they uncovered the foundations of a large Byzantine-era church, dating back roughly 1,500 years.
The carefully arranged stones, decorative elements, and sacred spaces revealed a significant place of worship. Researchers soon realized the site’s importance, linking it to Bethsaida—the New Testament hometown of Peter, Andrew, and Philip.
For centuries, scholars had debated Bethsaida’s exact location, but El Arj’s proximity to the shoreline and evidence of first-century life (including fishing tools and coins from Jesus’s era) supported the idea that this was indeed the biblical village.
The church’s significance was further confirmed by an 8th-century pilgrim account from Bishop Willibald, who described visiting a church dedicated to Peter and Andrew in Bethsaida. The newly uncovered structure matched his description with striking accuracy.

The most stunning aspect of the discovery was the mosaic floor, exquisitely preserved beneath centuries of debris. Its intricate patterns revealed not only artistic craftsmanship but also a profound theological message.
The Greek inscription honored Peter as “the chief of the apostles,” echoing Jesus’s words: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19). For the early Christians who built this church, these words were not distant teachings—they were living truths, worthy of being preserved in stone.
The mosaic included a prayer asking Peter to intercede for the patron who commissioned the work and his family, revealing a community shaped by devotion and reverence. Imagine pilgrims entering this church centuries ago, stepping onto the mosaic and encountering a visual reminder of Jesus’s promise and Peter’s calling. Faith surrounded them, history spoke to them, and scripture lived among them.

Peter’s story is one of transformation—from fisherman to shepherd, from denial to restoration. He became a symbol of grace, proof that God works through imperfect people. The mosaic reflects a community that remembered and honored this transformation deeply.
For centuries, the church remained hidden, buried by floods and soil, its memory erased from the surface of history. Yet its message endured, waiting for the right moment to speak again. This discovery does not add new words to the Bible, but it confirms how deeply Jesus’s words shaped early Christian belief. It reminds us that faith leaves traces—sometimes hidden, never lost.
Near the waters of Galilee, a forgotten church has returned to light. Its mosaic, once walked upon by ancient pilgrims, now speaks again to the modern world, reminding us that the past is never truly silent and that the words of Jesus continue to inspire across generations.
