After 44 years of marriage, Samuel L. Jackson has finally revealed the truth about his relationship with his wife, Latanya Richardson Jackson.

In a candid interview for AARP’s October-November 2024 cover story, the 75-year-old actor opened up about the secrets and challenges behind their decades-long partnership, offering insights that shocked and inspired fans.

Jackson shared that the real secret to their enduring marriage is “a lot of tolerance.” He emphasized that every person has flaws, and the key is not giving up when it would be easy to walk away.

“I’ve done some crazy things in my marriage,” he admitted, “and so has she.” Rather than seeing these quirks as dealbreakers, Jackson explained that sometimes couples simply need to spend more time together and gain understanding, rather than rushing to judgment or separation.

He also revealed that ignoring certain bothersome qualities is essential to harmony. Both he and Latanya have learned to overlook traits in each other that might otherwise cause friction.

For example, Latanya has come to accept Samuel’s relentless work ethic. “I’m going to go to work all the time until it’s time,” he insisted, underscoring his passion for acting and commitment to his craft.

Samuel and Latanya celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary in April 2024, having first met in college. They share a daughter, Zoe, who is now 42. In a 2022 interview, the couple talked about a pact they made early in their marriage: to stay together no matter what.

They believed that the most revolutionary thing Black couples could do was to maintain a strong family unit, challenging stereotypes about African-American families.

Latanya noted, “People like to pretend that the nucleus of the African-American family isn’t a mother and a father. There’s this narrative that it’s just children being raised by women, which we know is false.” To change that, they committed to figuring things out together, regardless of the obstacles.

One of the biggest challenges they faced was Samuel’s addiction to drugs in the early days of their marriage. He recalled how Latanya and Zoe found him lying on the floor, prompting Latanya to call his best friend, a drug counselor, who helped Samuel enter rehab the next day. “I didn’t go kicking and screaming because I was tired,” Samuel said, acknowledging the turning point that saved both his life and his marriage.

Samuel is currently promoting the film adaptation of August Wilson’s play, “The Piano Lesson,” which stars him and features much of the cast from the 2022 Broadway revival directed by Latanya. The story, set in 1936, follows the Charles family and their heirloom piano—a symbol of their history and resilience.
