# You Will Never See Palmer Williams Jr. from House of Payne the Same Way Again!
Palmer Williams Jr., known for his iconic role as Floyd in Tyler Perry’s *House of Payne*, has a story that transforms how you view him—from a small-town Alabama kid to a television legend with over 200 episodes under his belt.
Born in Camden, Alabama, Palmer grew up in a unique environment on a Presbyterian church school campus, where his father was his principal and his mother, a vocalist and actress, was his first-grade teacher and librarian. She created talent shows in their hometown, igniting a spark in Palmer, but tragedy struck when cancer took her life at his tender age of 8, shattering his family structure.

Bounced between relatives in Mobile, Alabama, for seven years, Palmer grappled with grief while his father rebuilt their lives. Returning to Camden for high school, he carried the weight of his father’s legacy as principal, facing both admiration and resentment.
Despite excelling in sports, choir, and school politics, depression crept in as he struggled to define himself beyond his last name.
A pivotal moment came when, instead of pursuing football at the University of Alabama, a vocal performance at a Knoxville College alumni event—where his parents met—earned him a scholarship on the spot, nudged by his father’s subtle pride.
College unleashed his talents in music and theater, overcoming the shy boy who once teared up talking to girls. A brief Navy stint was abandoned as he drove to New York, winning six consecutive weeks at the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night, leading to a management contract and tours in Japan, even meeting Bobby Brown.

Yet, the instability of acting—once mocked as “unemployed” by a friend of his wife—pushed him to grind harder, touring with R&B stars like Keith Sweat and Monica, and producing plays.
A financial disaster with his production *Is Silver and Gold Worth Your Soul* nearly broke him, facing cast revolts and promoter threats in LA, only to be saved by a $47,000 miracle from a promoter, allowing a year-and-a-half tour. Still, he kept his landscaping business, cutting grass to survive between gigs.
In 2008, while serving as drama minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, a devastating firing from his volunteer role left him questioning everything—until a reluctant liturgical dance performance, initially resisted due to gas costs for his diesel truck, changed his life.

Unbeknownst to him, Tyler Perry was in the audience, and within six days of a tearful prayer in Perry’s studio parking lot, Palmer was cast in *House of Payne*.
What was meant to be six episodes turned into a historic run, tying and surpassing *The Jeffersons* for episodes with an African-American cast.
Alongside Patrice Lovely, a friend of 26 years, he also starred in *Love Thy Neighbor* on OWN. Today, with a $2 million net worth in 2024, Palmer continues creating through gospel music, theatrical productions like *Get Your House in Order*, and business ventures like the Pink Lion Jazz Club, while inspiring his four children and young talents with a legacy of grit, faith, and representation, believing he’s only at 40% of his potential.
